What’s Happening with the Church in Bucerias?

If you’ve spent any time in Bucerías, chances are you’ve passed by the iconic church in the center of town. It’s one of those landmarks that just sticks with you—classic Mexican architecture, nestled in the heart of a beach town where locals and expats live side by side. For many, it’s been a backdrop for Sunday strolls, or just a quiet moment on a hot afternoon.

So when I heard it was coming down, I had to see it for myself.

The church is currently being demolished. That’s right—brick by brick, it’s being taken apart. But before you get too upset, here’s the part that matters: this isn’t a disappearance, it’s a transformation. Plans are already in motion to rebuild, something more resilient, and more in line with the growing needs of the community.

I had the chance to talk to Carlos Grimaldi, who’s closely involved with the project. He shared a bit about the vision for the new structure and the reasons behind the decision. Turns out, this wasn’t just about aesthetics. Structurally, the old building wasn’t safe, and with the increase in community events and gatherings, there’s a real push to make the new church not only beautiful, but functional and secure for generations to come.

Standing on the lateral road near the site (yes, that noisy stretch that runs alongside the main highway), I couldn’t help but think about how much Bucerías has changed—and how much it’s still evolving. New developments, updated infrastructure, and now a completely rebuilt church. Progress isn’t always easy, especially when it involves tearing down something so familiar. But I do believe this is the kind of change that can bring people together.

And speaking of community projects that bring people together—Casa De La Paz is coming along beautifully. If you haven’t heard of it yet, it’s a special place that’s being built to serve kids and families in need. Every time I check in on it, I’m more impressed by the work being done. We’re getting really close to the finish line, and local support is going to be key in these final stages. It’s something everyone in this area can be proud of.

On a more unexpected note, if you’ve driven the highway recently, you may have noticed something new: blinking road reflectors lining the highway dividers. They look futuristic—especially at night—and they’re actually part of an effort to improve safety and visibility. It’s a small touch, but it speaks to the bigger shift we’re seeing across the region. Modern infrastructure, thoughtful upgrades, and a focus on making things better for both locals and visitors.

It’s hard not to feel a little nostalgic seeing the old church come down. Still, there’s something exciting about watching this town grow and rebuild.

For those interested, I will be sharing donation links as soon as I have them. Stay tuned!
