Experience the Unique Charm of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle Beyond Typical Beach Towns in Mexico

Updated: 3 days ago

We’re always reminded that there’s something different about this place.

Unlike more commercialized beach towns in Mexico, this small fishing village in the Riviera Nayarit offers a pace and atmosphere that feels both genuine and inviting. It’s a place where the rhythm of life slows down just enough to appreciate the simple pleasures without ever feeling dull.

And what we’ve noticed over time is this: the more time we spend here, the more it grows on us.

For anyone curious about living in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle or exploring real estate opportunities here, this gives a glimpse into what makes this town stand apart.

An Evening Experience in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

One evening, we found ourselves wandering along the marina just as the sun dipped below the horizon.

The water was calm, and the boats rocked softly, their reflections shimmering on the surface. People strolled leisurely, their laughter mixing with the gentle strumming of a guitar from a nearby café. The live music wasn’t loud or intrusive; it blended naturally into the background, creating a relaxed but lively atmosphere.

Families, couples, and friends shared this space with ease. Strangers exchanged smiles and greetings as if they were old friends.

We’ve experienced evenings like this before in La Cruz—but this one made something click.

The pace was slower than places like Puerto Vallarta or other Riviera Nayarit beach towns, but it never felt boring.

It just felt right.

What Makes La Cruz Special

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle feels different because it hasn’t lost its soul to tourism.

The town’s charm lies in its authenticity. Unlike larger beach towns where crowds and commercialism dominate, La Cruz maintains a strong sense of community and ease.

The streets are walkable, inviting exploration on foot rather than by car. And that walkability naturally leads to more interactions—quick conversations, familiar faces, and a feeling of being part of something rather than just passing through.

The marina is the heart of the town—not just a place for boats, but a gathering point where locals and visitors mix effortlessly.

The food scene reflects that same spirit: fresh seafood caught daily, prepared simply but with care, and often served by the same people who own the place.

Things to Do in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

There’s no shortage of things to do here—but they all fit the town’s relaxed rhythm:

  • Stroll the marina and watch the fishing boats come in

  • Enjoy seafood at small, locally owned restaurants

  • Take a boat trip to nearby beaches or snorkeling spots

  • Catch live music in the evenings

These experiences aren’t overproduced—they’re real. And that’s exactly the point.

Why People Stay in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle

We’ve heard it many times—and now we understand it more ourselves:

People come for a visit… and then they stay.

The slower pace allows you to actually relax, while the strong sense of community makes it easy to feel at home.

Exploring La Cruz: A Walkable Town Best Experienced by Golf Cart

One of the things we really appreciate about La Cruz de Huanacaxtle is how walkable it is.

You can easily get around on foot—whether you’re heading to the marina, grabbing dinner, or just wandering through town.

But that said… it’s also a lot of fun to explore by golf cart—and that’s exactly what we did.

We got our rental through Tony at www.RentMeLaCruz.com and so if you're in La Cruz this is the place to rent your E Bike, Golf Cart or off road vehicle!

First Stop: Playa La Cruz

Playa La Cruz Nayarit

We started the evening at Playa La Cruz, right next to the marina.

This spot is especially meaningful to us—it’s where we got engaged… and thankfully, she said yes.

It’s also where we got married, at the church right here in town.

So every time we come back, it’s not just a beach—it’s a place tied to some of our biggest life moments.

La Parota Grill: Music, Margaritas, and Community

From there, we headed over to La Parota Grill, just off the main plaza.

Live music was already going, the margaritas were flowing, and the atmosphere was exactly what you hope for on a night out in La Cruz.

We ended up chatting with the owner, who’s originally from Canada and has been living in La Cruz for over 20 years.

That alone says a lot. Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/65vrBNPwqYDpow549

A Local Favorite: Tacos On The Street

Tacos and Tacos on The Street

Next stop—tacos.

We made our way to one of our go-to spots, Tacos on the Street.

It’s a local staple and one of those places that’s always buzzing for a reason.

Come hungry—the tacos are solid, and if you’ve got room after, the flan is worth it. Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/9v8Mb7ceDonUeGYN7

Green Tomate: Ending the Night Right

Pizza at the Green Tomate

By this point, we were ready for the main course.

Green Tomate pulled us in with live music from the Crazy Family Band, playing all the hits and creating a fun, energetic vibe.

It felt festive without being overwhelming—just a great place to settle in, enjoy the moment, and take in the night.

And the pizza held its own too.

A Night That Reflects the La Cruz Lifestyle

That wrapped up the evening—but more importantly, it reminded us what everyday life in La Cruz can look like.

Simple, social, walkable… and full of moments that just happen naturally.

It’s that combination that keeps pulling people back—and eventually, keeps them here.

A Home That Fits the La Cruz Lifestyle

That’s part of why we’re excited to be representing a property here—Casa Pulpo.

Casa Pulpo reflects exactly what draws people to La Cruz:

  • Walkable to the marina and town center

  • Comfortable for full-time living or extended stays

  • Strong potential for rental income

It’s located in an area that’s growing, but still holds onto the character that makes La Cruz special.
